Seniors Lead Wildcats to victory in 2-1 win over Berkmar

(5/10/03 - Duluth, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats ended the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Berkmar on Senior Night on Sat May 10th. The win completed the regular season with the Wildcats going 7-5 in region play and 16-10 overall. A marked improvement from last seasons .500 play.

Playing their final game for the Wildcats were Seniors Matt Webb, Bobby Smith, Andy Lett, Ryan Khakzad, Klay Koster and Justin Hill.

Bobby Smith (2-2) was the starting pitcher and went the distance limiting the Patriots to one run and four hits while striking out 4 and walking 4.

It was a strange night for the offense as Duluth their only two runs in the second inning on a walk to Bobby Smith who stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored an an error on the catcher.  Klay Koester was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and finally stole home as part of a double steal with Andy Lett who was on first base.

Otherwise the Wildcats had just seven hits scattered throughout the game including singles by Seniors Matt Webb, Bobby Smith Andy Lett and Klay Koester. Other highlights include a 2-2 night for Brook Birdsong and a 1-2 outing for David Dell.

The Martin Boys lead Wildcats to 9-4 victory over Oconee County

(5/9/03 - Oconee County, GA)  Duluth got excellent pitching from starter Glenn Martin and timely hitting from shortstop Andrew Martin to propel the Wildcats to a 9-4 win over Oconee County on Fri May 9th. The win gives Duluth a 6-5 record in region play with one game remaining.

Glenn Martin (6-1) went 6 innings giving up two earned runs, scattering three hits, striking out three and walking none. Martin's control of the strike zone left the Oconee County Warriors off stride the entire game. Klay Koester came in during the seventh inning to close..

Sophomore Andrew Martin was one of the hitting stars going 3-3 including two singles, a home run, sacrifice fly and three RBI's. Justin Hill was 3-4 with two singles and a two run home run. Hill had three RBI's. Andy Lett, Hudson Holder and Ryan Khakzad also had base hits in the contest,

Duluth is 15-10 overall  for the season.

The Wildcats play their final regular season game on Sat 5/10 at 7:00 PM against Berkmar. The game will be played at Duluth and is Senior Night.

Wildcats get complete game win from Khakzad, 4-3 over Central

(5/8/03 - Lawrenceville, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats got four quick runs in the first two innings and hung on to beat Central Gwinnett 4-3 on Thur May 8th. The win gives Duluth a 5-5 regional record with two games left to play.

Senior Ryan Khakzad went the distance in giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits, striking out five and walking none.

Offensively, the Wildcats got just six hits, two each By David Dell, Brook Birdsong and Andrew Martin. The hitting trio also got one RBI each to account for three of the four Duluth runs. The fourth run came home on a Central Gwinnett error.

The win gives Duluth a 14-10 overall record.

The Wildcats play at Oconee County Fri 5/9 at 6:00 PM as region play continues.

Wildcats Bats go Silent in 12-2 Loss to South Gwinnett

(5/3/03 - Duluth, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats bats were silenced by South Gwinnett's Wes Tignor in a 12-2 loss at Duluth on Saturday May 3rd. The game was a re-schedule from Fri May 2nd which went three innings but was washed out after rain/lightning caused the cancellation.

The only offense for Duluth was a two run home run by Andrew Martin in the bottom of the fourth, otherwise a single by Matt Webb was the only other hit that the Wildcats could muster.

South Gwinnett scored seven runs in the 2nd inning to put the game out of reach. The Comets registered 14 hits overall off of five Duluth pitchers who were playing their fifth game of the week.

This loss brings Duluth to 4-5 in regional play and 13-10 overall.

Duluth plays Central Gwinnett on Monday 5/5 at 4:00 PM at Central.

Wildcat's give up two runs in bottom of 7th to suffer 3-2 loss

(4/30/03 - Dacula, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats had their offensive and defensive difficulties during a 3-2 loss to the Dacula Falcons on Wed 4/30. Dacula scored the tying run on a double and single in the bottom of the seventh. Then they got the winning run on an error with two outs. Klay Koester, relieving starter Josh Lett gave up the two runs (one earned) for the loss. Lett pitched well, giving up just one run on six hits during his five inning stint. He struck out four and walked just one. Koester got out of a jam in the 6th inning with a line drive  ball back to the pitcher and he doubled off the runner on third. But luck was not with him in the seventh.

Duluth missed many offensive opportunities, stranding five batters and having one batter picked off and one caught stealing. Duluth scored one run in the third on a base ht by Andy Lett, sacrifice bunt by Matt Webb, passed ball and then an infield out by David Dell for the RBI. The other Wildcat run came in the sixth inning on a lead off walk to Dell, base hit by Brook Birdsong, walk to Justin Hill to load the bases. Ryan Khakzad got a RBI sacrifice fly. Birdsong and B.J. Stapleton both had two hits and Andrew Martin had a solo single to round out the offense.

This loss brings Duluth to 4-4 in regional play.

Duluth plays South Gwinnett on Fri May 2nd at 7:00 PM at Franklin Field on the Duluth campus.

Wildcat Pitchers/Batters Dominate Meadowcreek for 9-0 Victory

(4/29/03 - Norcross, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats got both outstanding pitching and hitting for an easy 9-0 victory over the Meadowcreek Mustangs. The game was played on Tues 4/29 as a make-up for the rained out game on Fri 4/25. The win gives Duluth a 4-3 regional record and 13-8 overall.

Three Duluth pitchers combined for a one hitter against the Mustangs, with starter Ryan Khakzad going five innings for the win (1-2). Khakzad faced just 15 batters in his 5 innings of work, striking out five (5) and walking just one. He gave up no hits. Relievers Hunter Kyle and Bobby Smith pitched the 6th and 7th innings and also faced the minimum six batters allowing just one hit, striking out one. The Wildcats turned one double play, caught one runner stealing and picked one runner off first.

On offense, the bats came alive with a 10 hit attack led by solo home runs by Brook Birdsong and Justin Hill.  Hudson Holder had a two run home run. David Dell was 2-3 with two singles as the only Duluth hitter to have a multiple hit night. Andy Lett got two RBI's on single in the 2nd inning. Single RBI's went to Matt Webb, Andrew Martin, and B.J. Stapleton.

Duluth plays at Dacula on Wed 4/30 at 5:55 PM as regional play continues.

Wildcat pitching gives up three runs in Top of 7th for 6-4 loss

(4/28/03 - Duluth, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats had victory in their grasp, but the North Gwinnett Bulldogs came up with three runs in the top of 7th inning to take the lead and the victory 6-4 on Monday April 28th at Franklin Field. Duluth took an early 4-0 lead after 4 innings on two home runs by Justin Hill (first one in first inning with Matt Webb on second) for three RBI's. The Wildcats manufactured a run in the fourth inning on a single by B.J. Stapleton, hit and run single by Andy Lett to advance  Stapleton to third and a passed ball by the Bulldogs for the fourth run.

Duluth Pitcher Glenn Martin (no decision) had shutout the Bulldogs through 4 innings, but gave up a two run home run to N.Gwinnett first  baseman Stephen Brock in the fifth. Martin tired in the sixth giving up one more run and was relived by Cory Bearden to shut the door on any more Bulldog scoring in that inning. In the top of the seventh, Bobby Smith came in to close, but gave up three runs (two earned) as Duluth made some mental mistakes to help North Gwinnett put runners in scoring position.

North's Blake Wood went the distance and pitched a one-two-three inning in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.

The loss dropped Duluth to 3-3 in region play and 12-8 overall. North is 4-3 in region play.

This is the first of four games this week that will test the pitching staffs of most region teams due to the rain on Fri 4/25.  Duluth plays it make-up game at Meadowcreek on Tues 4/29 at 5:55 PM.

Wildcats Justin Hill's Grand Slam Highlights 9-2 Victory over Norcross

(4/23/03 - Duluth, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats won their third (3) straight region game (3-2) with an impressive pitching and hitting performance over cross town Norcross Blue Devils on Wed. 4/23. The final score was 9-2 and the highlight of the game was a grand slam by Justin Hill (6) in the bottom of the sixth that iced the game for Duluth. Just as impressive as the 11 hit attack by Duluth was the pitching of left hander Glenn Martin who went the distance to record his fifth (5) win of the season (5-1). Martin gave up two runs, both unearned on two Wildcat errors, five (5) hits and struck out seven (7) Blue Devils.

Offensively, Matt Webb led the hit parade going 3-3 with a single, 2 doubles, 1 RBI Sac Fly and 1 stolen base. Justin Hill was 3-4 with a single, double and the grand slam home run with 4 RBI's. David Dell went 1-3 with a single and RBI (Duluth's first run); Andy Lett was 1-2 with a double and two RBI's; Brook Birdsong, Ryan Khakzad, Andrew Martin and Hudson Holder all contributed with singles.

Duluth is 12-7 overall and 3-2 in Region 8AAAAA play. Norcross drops to 1-5 in region play

Wildcats Bobby Smith pitches complete game shut-out 4-0.

(4/21/03 - Snellville, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats Bobby Smith pitched a four hit complete game shut-out over the Shiloh Generals on Monday 4/21. The final score was 4-0. The win gives Duluth a 2-2 regional record and 11-7 overall.

Smith (1-1) gave up four singles. No Shiloh base runner got past second base.  He had four strikeouts and 14 groundball outs that tested the Duluth defense that committed no errors.

Smith got all the offense he would need in the first inning with back-back homeruns by Brook Birdsong (3) and Justin Hill (5). Other highlights from the offense that featured a ten (10) hit attack: Hudson Holder and Brook Birdsong were both 2-3 with Birdsong registering two RBI's. David Dell was 2-4 with a double and single. Matt Lischke got the fourth RBI on a ground out that scored B.J. Stapleton who had singled earlier in the inning. Andrew Martin had a double and Matt Webb a single to complete the attack.

Next Regional game is Wed 4/23 versus cross town rival Norcross at Franklin Field on the Duluth Campus. Game time is 5:55 PM

Wildcats bats bust loose with 12-4 victory over Brookwood

(4/18/03 - Duluth, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats got their first region win (1-2) with a dominating victory over Brookwood at Franklin Field on the Duluth Campus on Friday April 18th. The final score was 12-4. Duluth had 12 hits including four (4) homeruns to bust out of their hitting slump and break a four (4) game losing streak.

The Wildcats gave up three runs to Brookwood in the top of the first inning (2 earned), but came back in the bottom of the first inning with three of their own. The highlight of the inning was a two run homerun by Justin Hill. Duluth scored two more in the bottom of the second to take a lead they never relinquished. They scored three (3)  in the fifth and four (4) in the sixth to complete the scoring binge. David Dell was 3-4 with a double, two singles and one RBI. Justin Hill was 2-4 including two home runs and four RBI's. Matt Webb (2 RBI's) and Hudson Holder (1 RBI) also got home runs.  Brook Birdsong was 2-4 to add to the offensive blitz. Other RBI's went to Dell, Birdsong, Andrew Martin and B.J. Stapleton.

Glenn Martin was the starting pitcher for Duluth giving up four (4) runs (three earned) in 3 1/3 innings. Cory Bearden came on in the fourth to register the victory (2-0) and gave up no runs while striking out three in 1 2/3 innings. Josh Lett pitched two innings to record the save giving up no runs on one hit and three strikeouts

The Wildcats are now 10-7 in overall play

Next Regional game is Monday 4/21 at Shiloh (2-2 in regional play). Game time is 4:00 PM

Wildcats lose on walk-off homerun in bottom of 8th 4-3

(4/14/03 - Suwanee, GA)  The Duluth Wildcats lost a heartbreaker with a 4-3 8 inning loss to Collins Hill Eagles on Monday April 14th. The winning run was a walk-off homerun by the Eagles R.M. Cozza off losing pitcher Brandon Maynard. The Wildcats open Region play at  0-2.

Duluth started the game strong scoring three quick runs in the first three innings, but didn't score after that. In the second, the Wildcats loaded the bases on  a single by Andrew Martin, an Eagle error that put Ryan Khakzad on base and a walk to B.J. Stapleton. Hudson Holder got a long sacrifice RBI fly ball to centerfield to score Martin and move Khakzad to third. Stapleton stole second base and on an errant throw to second that went into centerfield, Khakzad scored. In the third inning, Andy Lett doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a fielders choice ground ball by Brook Birdsong.

David Dell was 2-3 (2 singles) to lead the eight hit attack.

Bobby Smith started the game and went five (5) innings giving up just one run on four hits, striking out four. Cory Bearden, in relief, gave up the tying run in the seventh inning.

Duluth has a bye in region play on Wed 4/16 and will be back in action against Brookwood on Fri 4/18 at 7 PM at Franklin Field on the Duluth campus.

Wildcats Stay close to Parkview until 6th inning, lose 8-1

(4/12/03 - Duluth GA)  The Duluth Wildcats stayed with the defending state champion Parkview Panthers through five innings, but fell 8-1 on Saturday April 12th.

Duluth's Glenn Martin and Parkview's Matt Raettig were in a pitching duel for five innings, but the Panthers broke through for 4 runs in the 6th inning  and three more in the seventh to break open the game and went on for the easy win. Martin (4-1) went five innings giving up 4 earned runs on 6 hits. Klay Koester pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and gave up 3 runs. Brandon Maynard went 2/3 of an inning giving up no runs.

Offensively, there were just 4 Wildcat hits including Andrew Martin who scored Duluth's only run. He came home in the second inning on Hudson Holder's RBI single.

The Wildcats will try to get on the winning track on Monday April 14th as region play continues. They will travel to Collins Hill (0-0) for a 4:30 PM game time.

Wildcats Lose both ends of Day-Night Doubleheader

(4/7/03 - Panama City, Florida)  The Duluth Wildcats had their nine (9) game winning streak snapped with  losses on both sides of a day-night doubleheader. They lost to Bay High 4-1 and Lynn Haven Mosley in the nightcap 6-4. The two losses ended the Florida trip with a 2-2 record.

In game one, Bay High limited the Wildcats to just three hits. Two hits came in the same inning as Brook Birdsong doubled and was driven in by a RBI double by Ryan Khakzad.

Starting pitcher Ryan Khakzad got the loss giving up the four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Klay Koester pitched 1/ 1/3 innings of perfect relief giving no runs or hits. Duluth committed just one error.

In game two, Duluth had 4 runs and 9 hits, but came up short against Lynn Haven Mosley 6-4. Offensive leaders during game two include Matt Webb (3-4) and Hudson Holder (2-3). David Dell had two RBI's and Brook Birdsong and Justin Hill had solo RBI's.

Bobby Smith started game two, going just two innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and getting the loss. Josh Lett pitched four innings on relief and gave up just two runs (one earned) on four hits.

Region 8 AAAAA play starts this Friday April 11th against 2002 State Champion Parkview. Game time is 7:00 PM

Wildcats Win 9th Straight on Pitching Dominance 6-1

(4/5/03 - Panama City, Florida)  The Duluth Wildcats won their 9th straight game, second game on the four game swing in Florida,  with a 6-1 victory over the Rutherford Rams on Saturday April 5th. Glenn Martin went the distance for the win (4-0), striking out five, walking none, allowing five (5) hits and giving up just one earned run. The Wildcats defense supported Martin committing just one error in the ballgame.

On offense, Brook Birdsong lead the charge going 2-3 (two singles), walking once and getting one RBI; Justin Hill and Matt Webb each doubled for single RBI's.

Next Games for Duluth are Monday April 7th, a doubleheader, with game 1 at 4 PM at Bay High and the nightcap at 7:30 PM against Lynn Haven Mosley.

 

Wildcats breakthrough for 12 runs in 5th inning for 8th straight

(4/4/03 - Port St. Joe, Florida)  The Duluth Wildcats won their 8th straight game with a 15-3 victory over the Port St. Joe Sharks on Friday April 4th. A week layoff and the long trip south showed as the Wildcats made four errors, and walked three. But in the end, the Sharks sloppy play and inability to throw strikes gave the Wildcats the opportunity to put the game away in the fifth inning. Duluth broke a 3-3 tie in that fifth inning bringing 15 players to the plate,  scoring 12 runs, on six (6) hits, receiving five (5) walks, one hit batter, two wild pitches and two errors.

The offense was led by Matt Webb who went 3-4, with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's. Andrew Martin was 2-4 with two bunt singles and Eric Smith had a double with 2 RBI's.

Brandon Maynard got the win (1-1) in relief of Cory Bearden who got his first start of the season. Bearden went 3 2/3 innings, giving two (2) earned runs, striking out six and walking one. Maynard finished the game going 1 1/3 innings giving up no runs, striking out one and walking two

Wildcats pitching dominates Cougars 11-0 for 7th straight

(3/27/03 - Alpharetta ,GA)  The Duluth Wildcats won their 7th straight game with a 11-0 shutout victory over the Chattahoochee Cougars on Thur. March 27th. Glenn Martin (3-0) pitched a complete game shutout for his third win of the season, giving up just three hits while striking out five (5) and walking just one (1).  Martin lowered his  ERA to 0.78 for the season.

The offense was led by Hudson Holder who hit a three run homerun (1) in the fourth inning that capped a seven run outburst for the Wildcats. Brook Birdsong was 2-3 with a single and triple and Ryan Khakzad had a double that scored two RBI's. Matt Webb had three stolen bases, including two in the first inning after he bunted for a base hit. Birdsong drove him home for the first Duluth run.Chattahoochee pitching gave up four walks and two hit batters to go along with the seven hit Wildcat attack.

Defensively, Duluth played errorless ball.

Next Games for the Varsity are during Spring Break as the team travels to Panama City, Florida to play four games. First game is Friday April 4th against Port St. Joe.

Wildcats get 16 hits in 17-5 Win over Chattahoochee

(3/24/03 - Duluth ,GA)  The Duluth Wildcats won their sixth game in a row with a convincing 17- 5 win over  the visiting Chattahoochee Cougars on Mon 3/24. Duluth's overall record is now 6-3. The game featured sixteen (16) hits for the Wildcats that included four (4) home runs, two from David Dell (2) and two from Justin Hill (2). Dell overall was 4-5 with four (4) RBI's. Hill was 2-3 with four (4) RBI's also. Andrew Martin was 3-4 with two singles and one double. Brook Birdsong and B.J. Stapleton had 2 RBI's each and Hudson Holder had a solo RBI to round out the runs batted in for Duluth

Bobby Smith started for the Wildcats and recorded seven (7) strikeouts in 2 and 2/3 innings. Cory Bearden pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run. Hunter Kyle pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the victory (1-0). Brandon Maynard also pitched scoreless relief as Kyle/Maynard struck out the side in the top of the 6th with the bases loaded.  The Duluth pitching staff recorded 11 strikeouts in the 6 innings played.

Wildcats Sweep Doubleheader against Chamblee

(3/22/03 - Chamblee ,GA)  The Duluth Wildcats won their fourth and fifth games in a row with doubleheader victories over the Chamblee High School Bulldogs on Saturday March 22nd. Their overall record is now 5-3 for the Spring 2003 season. Duluth won game one 7-3. Pitching and timely hitting dominated game one with Glen Martin (2-0) going five strong innings for the win. Martin had nine (9) strikeouts, giving up no earned runs, three (3) hits and three (3) walks. Brook Birdsong's three run blast in the 5th inning was the key hit of the game. This is Birdsong's 2nd three run home run of the season. Andy Lett and B.J. Stapleton both had two hits in the game to lead the offense.

Duluth took the night-cap 6-5 in a five inning shortened game due to darkness. Brook Birdsong led the offense going 2-3 (single and double) and Ryan Khakzad had a single and two RBI's. Matt Webb had three stolen bases in game two and five overall for the doubleheader. Josh Lett was the winning pitcher (1-1) with Klay Koester getting the save (2).

Next Game will be Monday 3/24 at 5:55 PM versus Chattahoochee High School at Franklin Field on the Duluth High School Campus.

Wildcat bats come alive against Marietta to even record at 3-3

(3/15/03 - Duluth ,GA) The Duluth Wildcats made it three in a row with a 11-8 victory over visiting Marietta on Saturday night March 15th. This evened the season record at 3-3. Every Wildcat batter joined the hit parade as they collected 14 hits including a home run by Matt Webb (1st) to lead off the first inning. Webb also had a single and stole a base. David Dell had two doubles and scored three runs;  Brook Birdsong was 2-3 including a double and scoring one run; Matt Lischke was 2-3 including a double with 2 runs scored and Justin Hill went 2-3 (both singles). RBI leaders were Justin Hill with 3 and Webb and Birdsong collecting 2 each. The Wildcats have scored 26 runs with 29 hits in their last three games.

Senior Klay Koester got his first win of the season (1-0) as he came in the 4th inning to relieve starter Bobby Smith. Smith went three and 2/3 innings and gave up four (4)  earned runs, striking out four, while Koester gave up just a solo home run in his 2 1/3 innings of work. Josh Lett came in with two outs in the top of the seventh and two on to record the save.

Birdsong leads Wildcats to second win with Five RBI's

(3/14/03 - Woodstock ,GA) The Duluth Wildcats made it two in a row with a big 9-6 comeback win versus Woodstock on Fri Night March 14th. Brook Birdsong lead the charge with a home run (1st), double and 5 RBI's. His home run in the top of the fourth inning scored Matt Webb who singled and David Dell (hit by pitch) that tied the score at 3-3. The Wildcats had seven hits overall with Matt Webb going 2-4 with three (3) runs scored and David Dell batting 1-2 with three (3) runs scored. Duluth took the lead in the Top of the fifth when they scored four (4) runs on five consecutive hits from B.J. Stapleton, Matt Lischke, Webb, Dell and Birdsong. The final two insurance runs came in the top of the seventh (7) when they scored two runs without a hit.

Pitching was outstanding as the Wildcats gave up only one earned run. Ryan Khakzad started for Duluth and went three (3)  innings giving up the solo earned run, striking out three and walking two. Cory Bearden was the winning pitcher, pitching three (3) innings also with no earned runs. Brandon Maynard got the save with a perfect seventh inning including one strikeout.

Shutout Pitching Gives Wildcats First Win

(3/12/03 - Duluth ,GA) The Duluth Wildcats got their first win of the season with a 6-0 victory over Lakeside. Three Duluth pitchers limited the Lakeside batters to just three hits. Glen Martin was the starting pitcher, got the victory and pitched 4 2/3 scoreless inning while giving up three (3) hits spread over separate innings. Martin had three (3) strikeouts and one (1) walk during his stint. Klay Koester and Bobby Smith finished the game giving up no runs and no hits.

On offense, David Dell went 2-4 with 2 doubles, Matt Webb was also 2-4 with a double and Justin Hill went 2-3 to lead the eight (8) hit Wildcat attack. Hill and Dell collected RBI's for Duluth.

Next Game will be Fri March 14th at Woodstock High School at 6:30 PM. Next Home Game is Saturday 3/15 at 6 PM versus Marietta

 

Duluth Loses Home Opener in Hitting Slugfest

(3/8/03 - Duluth ,GA) The Duluth Wildcats lost their home opener to  Sprayberry High School 10-4. The game featured 22 hits, 12 from the visiting Yellow Jackets and 10 from the Wildcats. Duluth took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning on a leadoff double by Matt Webb and an RBI single from Justin Hill. They held the lead until the top of the third when Sprayberry scored 3 unearned runs to take the lead which they never relinquished. The visitors added 4 more in the top of the 4th and Duluth never could get caught up.

Offensive highlights include doubles by Matt Webb, Andrew Martin and B.J. Stapleton. RBI's were produced by Justin Hill, David Dell and Andrew Martin. Matt Webb was 3-4 with four (4) stolen bases in the contest. Pitchers Pitchers Bobby Smith and Cory Beardon pitched shut out ball in their two (2) innings of work.

Next Home Game will be Wed March 12th at Duluth High School versus Lakeside. Game time is 5:55 PM

 

Duluth Bats are Silenced at  Centennial

(3/7/03 - Roswell,GA) The Duluth Wildcats were on the road for the second straight game and had their bats silenced by Centennial Senior Everett Teaford who went the distance in a 3-1 Centennial victory. The Wildcats managed just one run off of one hit from Justin Hill, a double, in the fifth inning. A passed ball moved the runner to third and scored on an infield RBI out from David Dell.

The Wildcat defense was flawless committing no errors, turning one double play and catching a Centennial player in a run down. Pitching was also excellent as five Duluth pitchers saw action. Starter Josh Lett got the loss as he gave up three (3) earned runs on three (3) hits in the first inning. The balance of the staff, Cory Beardon, Hunter Kyle, Bobby Smith and Brandon Maynard pitched shutout ball for the remaining five (5) innings.

The Wildcats will try to get on the winning track during their home opener on Saturday March 8th against Sprayberry at 1:00 PM.

Duluth Loses Road Opener 3-2 versus Norcross

(3/3/03- Norcross, GA) The Duluth Wildcats lost a heartbreaker Monday night with a 3-2 loss versus cross town rival Norcross. Norcross scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie and then win the game. The last run was un-earned as a dropped third strike resulted in a throwing error that pulled the first baseman off the base as the winning run scored. Other than the last play of the game, the Wildcats played flawless ball in the field including two put outs at the plate and one at third base. The pitching was outstanding as the Wildcats tossed 4 pitchers at the Norcross batters that combined for a total of two earned runs, giving up six hits striking out four while walking four.  Ryan Khakzad was the starting pitcher that gave up no runs on one solid hit and two infield hits.  Glen Martin followed for two innings giving up one run on one hit.  Klay Koester also pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up no runs.  Brandon Maynard got the loss giving up one earned run in 1 1/3 innings.

Offensively, the Wildcats were led by Brook Birdsong who went 2 for 3 (single and a double). Ryan Khakzad and  Hudson Holder both contributed with RBI singles.

Next Game is Friday March 7th at Centennial High School (game time is 5:55 PM) followed by the home opener at Franklin Field on Sat March 8th at 1 PM versus Sprayberry High School.
